Spring was certainly in the air this week at Forest School, the sun shone which lifted everyone’s spirits! The children had to quickly learn immense patience and cooperation for this week’s warm up activity, which was a game of ‘Count off’. The winning team managed to count collectively up to 22 after many failed attempts of calling out the same number altogether, but a group strategy soon helped!

This week at school we were very excited when two boxes arrived containing 60 tree saplings from the Woodland Trust. So armed with spades and canes half the class firstly set about arranging themselves in a suitable tree formation before digging and planting Rowan, Cherry and Silver Birch trees. Due to our heavy clay soil, however the digging was very heavy going… but the children persevered and did a fantastic job. Thank you children! Next week we will take a measurement of the trees and you can monitor their progress over the coming years.

The other half of the class were given the challenge of using sticks to make a pyramid. So, having given no guidance they set about organising themselves into groups and worked with great diligence to create their structures. All different in structure and design, the pyramids looked fantastic. It was lovely to hear the conversations as children discussed the shape, strength and features of their models. Well done to you all!

To conclude our session this week we sat around the fire circle to enjoy the afternoon sun and sang one of our favourite Forest School songs…A roo cha cha. It never fails to raise a smile as children and adults try to sing the chorus of the song whilst performing many actions, including tongues sticking out!

As children walked back up the field to school, the words, “That’s the best Forest school session ever!” could be heard. No pressure for the last session next week!
